Are You Focused On The Prize?

mouse chaseThere is no greater skill in any endeavor than the ability to focus. Whether it is sport, business, study or negotiating your car around a winding road, you had better develop  your focus “muscle”.  Have you ever started a marketing campaign and half way through decided to jump from one strategy to another new , bright , shiny strategy?

Well let me say this, you’re not alone.

This inability to focus on one line of thought (or action) is responsible for many failed campaigns. When it comes to marketing you are better off choosing a few well selected strategies and implementing them single mindedly, rather than switching tactics repeatedly.

This way of doing anything does not allow for any valid measurement or assessment of the effectiveness of a particular course of action! You can combat this lack of focus by ensuring you have a burning desire for a specific result. Team this with written goals, an achievable time frame, as well as  a means of measuring the outcomes and you have a potent method for success.

Yes,  a sprinkling of good old fashioned discipline will help you stay the course. The main weapon in the battle though is the documenting of the goals and time frame. One more important ingredient to maintain your focus on getting real results – share your goals with a partner, colleague or support buddy. By telling someone else about your plans you become accountable, meaning you will feel a greater sense of urgency in completing your activities.

Try this for your next project. Plan and commit to a course of action, share it with someone who will take an interest in your success and do not make excuses to change your strategy until you have completed your mission.

Remember, when the prize looks blurry and far away sometimes all you need to do is focus…..
